Homeowners frustrated to see their values dropping due to area foreclosures and new buyers scooping up identical properties for pennies on the dollar. Let's be happy to be fortunate enough to still have shelter regardless of the I'll circumstances. I looked at some statistics on homelessness and poverty and I understand how blessed we are to still have our stuff even if we are getting burned.

How Obama Can Address High Unemployment

OBAMA nearly only active recruiter in US. with 300k applicants to date, ONLY 3k(or slightly less 1%) will receive offers. Now the issue is how will the Administration handle job searches for the nearly 3 millions Americans still seeking HOPE on the job front?Sadly, the economic development, workforce agencies run by local and state governments have a track record of dealing with unemployment with a 20th century understanding and approach. For example, the unemployment profile typically reflected medium to low-skilled workers who could benefit from developing certain technical skills. However, the unemployed of the 21st century are the reverse - high skilled, college educated professionals. Quite Frankly, how will these local workforce teams handle their problems in an across-the-board reduction of talent? One suggestion I have for the new administration is parallel to the Charter School System embraced by public education, which realized it neither could handle the woes of its constituents. In other words, empower local recruitment agencies, sponsored through the government that can offer specialized assistance. Specifically, I would love to see a internship program for mid-career professionals who can transfer and translate existing skills into new sectors, creating a two fold benefit.1. Professionals can maintain skills, or develop new ones, in a tightening economy. It also enables them to seize opportunities, be it through sector or market, that would otherwise be closed off to them via salary or network. (This assumes talent willl be provided fees for transportation and lunch, as well as ALLOWED to receive unemployment benefits during intern period).2. Companies participating receive access to high-quality professionals. Most importantly, in this tight economic period, this talent will off set many of human capital depletion companies are facing due to lay offs. This also broadens company's talent pipeline, hopefully reducing recruitment fees and search time/interview period. While we are not in a perfect world, I recognize drawbacks to this scheme. Most notably, American greed will dictate that internship program is great and would love to keep workabees on the cheap. Oversight must be in place to reduce abuse and have clear intern-to-work trajection. To effectively establish this program, I recommend a test case in one market, like NYC, where you can get a cross-section of sectors and applicants alike (yet keep the test pool small enough to gauge results). But the last thing I want to see are top-notch professionals whithering away waiting for the market to turn around, or even worst, going broke.

Geithner: Friend or Foe to Revive US Economy?

Much concern surrounds the appointment of Tim Geithner, former NY Federal Reserve Chair, as Obama's key leader in revamping the banking system as Secretary of the Treasury. Beyond Geithner's failure to pay taxes - quite frankly, we all have been hit by Uncle Sam at some point because the system remains antiquated and unclear - the real issue lays in Geithner's ability to dig the US out of its current problems and bring regulation and oversight into the 21st century.

Geithner the Friend:

1. His life work has been at the forefront of credit derivatives regulation
2. Key player in initiating Bear Sterns bail out prior to sector-wide carnage
3. Excellent experience not just domestically, but working with foreign relations and affairs

Geithner the Foe:

1. As a regulatory leader throughout the late 90's/00's, his involvement in the credit default swamp innovation market he stands as part of the problem, not the solution.
2. As a proponent to each bailout scheme, Geithner's judgement is flawed as system has yet to correct.
3. In an environment of villainous knaves, a senior government official who evades personal taxes is exactly the person not to lead the treasury.

Given both angles of the argument, I will play the optimist:

1. The very team that created the problem is the only team that can fully comprehend unraveling the mess to rebuild anew.
2. With clear marching orders from the executive office, Geithner can now elevate himself out of the bureaucracy and sycophancy prevalent in the middle-management trenches of the regulatory environment.
3. I welcome a Treasury Secretary who has experienced the plight of IRS land-mines that have forsaken so many of us.

If this man uses his power for good (enforce regulation and develop an innovative stimulus package) rather than evil (wipe out his own tax history at the IRS, leaving the rest of us to fend for ourselves), then Geithner is exactly the man for the role.

Advice to Geithner: This is the position of your life - make emphatic choices and take no prisoners. No need to be polite to career congressmen. We need a bulldog, not a lapdog.
FYI, upgrade to H&R Block for your taxes (at least they offer a guarantee)!

The Sock Exchange: A New Currency You can Wear

This is a cartoon by Diognes Ruiz, a talented digital artist, as well as a social entrepreneur. With the terrible economic twists and roller coaster that we're experiencing, this cartoon seems particularly apt. It also makes reference to the new line of Sierra Club Socks that is getting launched Nov 1 at an online Sockathon. Join us: http://www.sierraclubsocks.com

Stressed people play drums in Iceland

Due to the financial crisis here in Iceland, and the local currency going way down, a drum festival was held today in Reykjavik.
People who like drums ,had a minor festival today at 17:00 gmt.

And people who came where told to drum with the group.
This was being down - because ,many are having a bad day - loans going up - and trouble in the financial sector.

And England has used UK terror laws against Icelandic banks in England - ,because the president of the Iceland central bank, said in a tv interview ,that the Icelandic banks would not pay their debts in England.

And tomorrow there will be a protest in front of the Parliement - to try to make the goverment change the Bank managers that control the ICelandic Central Bank.
