Sadly, yesterday's ride left me feeling lethargic, depressed, and unmotivated. Winter solstice? Perhaps. Recession Depression? Definitely.

Given the ride seemed more like a funeral march, I believe the high number of pink slips and 0% bonus payouts, coupled with consistently grey skies and rainy days, make this Recession Depression grave. Rather than allow this viral slump to spread further, I recommend a self-imposed vaccination:

1. Walking: Its cold so those long walks don't always make sense. But to the extent you can get your blood flowing and shorten your subway experience, do so. Walk an extra couple of blocks to shake off the pervasive sadness (It also helps shed the extra holiday weight).

2. Escalators: Riding the escalator is the first symptom of the cog-in-the-wheel effect. Lift those legs and take the stairs. Not only will it stimulate your endorphins and make you feel you have one up on everyone else, it psychologically demonstrates a take-charge attitude. Once you are strong enough, hold in your stomach muscles - in 6 months your six pack will compete with mine. Exception: Lexington @ 51st Street, too many stairs there (unless you truly wish to entertain suicide via cardiac arrest).

3. Tunes: If you actually sit on the subway, listen to music. The newspaper is not enough. The grim reaper will get you. You must enter a mental-safe zone. I recommend something upbeat, but songs that put smiles on your face are best.

4. Time: Try to give yourself an extra 10 minutes in the morning if you are a rush-hour hound. While you may control your personal zen, reality stands such that most fellow citizens love deflecting angst by picking fights (for which even I am guilty). Human nature is awful sometimes. Be clever. Don't be the pushy bad guy or seat hogger, etc. Yes it's aggravating, but most likely the other person lost his/her fortune, or even worst, never had one and is a pink slipper.

While far from perfect, I hope my advice at the very least gives you the stamina to avoid being sucked into the underbelly of subway depression. Though a great attitude and buns of steel will not compensate for unemployment or negative portfolios, it can give you that extra pep to ride this economic downturn.
